Camtasia Camtasia Links to an external site. is easy to learn yet powerful software for editing and annotating video and is available for both Windows and Mac. You can simultaneously capture your screen and yourself with a webcam, and it can automatically combine the two video tracks into one project. You can then edit your recording to cut out sections, add call-outs and other annotations, and zoom in on part of your recording (such as part of a web page, or software). As you might expect from a company that makes educational software, they have a great collection of tutorial videos Links to an external site. available. More robust video capture and advanced editing tools.
OBS OBS Links to an external site. (Open Broadcaster Software) is free, open-source software for video recording and live streaming, and is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It is relatively easy to learn but is quite powerful, and there are many guides Links to an external site. available as well as YouTube tutorials (example Links to an external site.). It cannot be used to edit or annotate video, however, so something like Camtasia or OpenShot would still be needed for that. Video recording and live streaming (no editing).
OpenShot OpenShot Links to an external site. is free, open-source software for video editing, and is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Beginner-friendly video editing.
Microsoft 365 Microsoft 365 is a cloud-based service is free for U of T faculty and staff. It offers MS Stream, a screen and webcam recording tool that stores videos in your account, and a useful feature is auto captioning. MS PowerPoint also has built-in tools for recording a presentation with narration Links to an external site.. Creating and storing recordings internally in your U of T account.
Clipchamp logo

Clipchamp is a free video editing app that is available through your U of T Microsoft 365 account Links to an external site.. It offers screen capturing and editing videos and is integrated with other Microsoft tools including MS Stream, OneDrive, and Sharepoint. Features include free stock image library, green screen, auto-captioning, and text-to-speech. The desktop app is available in Windows Links to an external site..

Zoom Links to an external site. is video conferencing software with a simple built-in recording tool. U of T provides a free Zoom Education account for faculty, staff, and students through the utoronto.zoom.us site. Recordings can be saved locally on your computer, or in cloud storage for up to 365 days (NOTE: students don't have access to cloud recording). Simple video recordings for asynchronous teaching (no editing).

Canva Canva Links to an external site. is an online design and publishing tool. Use Canva's drag-and-drop feature and layouts to design, share, and print logos, presentations, posters, documents, and other visual content.
GIMP The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) Links to an external site. is similar to Photoshop yet is available for free. Not all image editing features may be available in GIMP, but it is a good place to start if you're looking to do image editing and correction without subscribing to a suite of programs.
Photoshop Adobe Photoshop Links to an external site. is a powerful image editing tool that may be helpful when preparing images for presentation or publication. It is available through subscription from Adobe only, and may also be available on certain workstations located throughout the University of Toronto library system.

It has some unique features such as the ability to stitch screenshots together from an area larger desktop (such as from Google Maps, or to capture a full webpage or image). Photos can be grouped into individual research documents or objects, and documents can be grouped into collections or tagged. Tropy also allows for notes to be added to describe or transcribe your research images, and features basic image manipulation tools such as zoom, crop and rotate.
