Final Exam
- Due No Due Date
- Points 100
- Location: Gym C
- Date: Dec 9th, 2019
-
Time: 9 am to 11 am
- Content:
- Duration: 2 hours.
- 5 problems, on average 4 parts each, parts are related to each other. No bonus questions.
- You will have enough information to continue a problem, even if you can't do one part in between.
- Difficulty is more or less like the past final exams; 2015 Download 2015, 2016 Download 2016 and 2017 Download 2017.
- Problems will not be routine computations. They will test whether you understand the definitions and theorems introduced during the lectures.
-
- Don't expect to find any of the problems in these past exams, the six homework assignments, suggested problems, tutorial quizzes or any problem in the text book to be repeated in your exam.
- However, if you have studied the examples discussed in the lectures, and in the written up notes, and understand the intuition behind them, you'd be able to do well in the exam.
- The best way to study for the exam is to carefully go over the notes I have uploaded to the modules (from week 1 to 12), and solve suggested problems. Don't try to memorize ways to solve problems. Instead try to understand the reasoning behind different approaches.
- Also I would suggest you to go through the tutorial quizzes and the homework assignments. Understand your mistakes and try to correct them.
- For some practice more problems look at Lynch, Sections 22.2 (page 607):
-
- Examination 1: Problems 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (a)
- Examination 2: Problems 2, 3 (a), 4 (a)
- Examination 3: Problems 1, 2, 3 (a)
-
- You're expected to know the basics of single and multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and ODE required for the course. On top of that anything we discussed from week 1 till 12 is fair game. So make sure you go over each and every topic we discussed.
- The exam will not be graded on a curve!
- On the day of the exam:
-
- Make sure you arrive at the Gym C at least 15 minutes before.
- Bring you TCard with you.
- No aids are permitted.
- Make sure you keep your mobile turned off (even if it is in your bag). We don't want mobile phones ringing during the exam.
- Hints for writing the exam:
- Before start writing take a few minutes to skim through all the questions , and arrange them according to an increasing order of difficulty.
- First, attempt the problems that you feel are easy. Then, move on to more difficult ones. Try to attempt all parts.
- Do not waste time on a single part of a problem. If you find a part difficult use the information given in the part and move on. You can always come back and complete the problem later.
- Read the questions carefully to understand what the question is asking. Provide answers to all the questions raised.
- I cannot give marks for things you have not written in your exam script. Remember that I cannot read your mind. So if you used any idea to deduce an answer, write it down clearly.
- Do not write unnecessarily long answers. However, provide all the required reasoning. Be concise but complete!
- Make sure to bring an eraser, a few pencils and a sharpener. Use a pencil when sketching.
