Conclusion - Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication
Overview
In this module, we covered workplace communication in its verbal and non-verbal dimensions. We compared hearing and listening. We also introduced the concepts of "professionalism" and code-switching, and how they may affect the way you, your classmates, and your co-workers communicate.
We discussed best practices in verbal and non-verbal communication, including video calls, and best practices in written communication, including the importance of keeping a paper trail.
We explored best practices in effective meetings, and various types of business writing:
- emails,
- memos,
- reports, and
- proposals.
All these forms of communication will be a component of your workplace experience at one time or another and it is important to be aware of how to optimally conduct yourself to ensure you are an effective communicator.
Reflection
Think about the best practices we discussed in this module. Which of these best practices do you already use in the ways you communicate? What is one thing you have done in a recent communication that went well? Can you think of a moment where you could have strengthened your communication practices? What was the situation? What could you have done differently using the concepts covered in this module? How will you practice these concepts in your work terms and future careers?
Your SI Challenge Assignment
As we reach the end of this module, think back to the content we have covered in PD3 and PD4 to this point and the assignments you have already completed.
These are good questions to think about as you begin your final assignment required for PD4. |
