June 28, 2023 Flexible Learning Initiative (FLI)
The Flexible Learning Initiative (FLI) provides funding to support instructors in the development of fully online or hybrid undergraduate courses. The program aims to increase the range of online learning opportunities at the University of Toronto while building capacity for innovative approaches to teaching and learning. Funding will be made available to teams of three instructors who will address a focus area of strategic importance to their discipline, department and/or division as they redesign a course for fully online or hybrid delivery.

Award/Fund Description
A&S Outstanding Teaching Award The Faculty of Arts & Science Outstanding Teaching Award recognizes teaching excellence in undergraduate and graduate education with a focus on classroom instruction and course design and/or curriculum development.
A&S Superior Teaching Award The Sessional Lecturer & Graduate Student Course Instructor Superior Teaching Award (STA) award is for sessional and graduate course instructors.
Adams Sustainability Faculty Grant As part of the Adams Sustainability Celebration, 3 grants of $5,000 each were made available to U of T faculty members and instructors to add sustainability to their courses or curriculum. The objective was to design, develop, or enhance curriculum options for U of T students to learn more about sustainability topics and challenges.
Data-Driven Design: Quercus Analytics (D3:QA) The Data-Driven Design: Quercus Analytics (D3:QA) initiative examines opportunities provided by the Quercus Analytics module and related services. Building on our earlier experience with a cohort-based approach (2019–2021), the primary goal will be to provide support to instructors in using Quercus student data to make course redesign decisions aimed at enhancing instruction and learner experience.
Early Career Teaching Award The University of Toronto Early Career Teaching Award recognizes faculty members who are effective teachers and demonstrate an exceptional commitment to student learning, pedagogical engagement, and teaching innovation.

Global Educator Award The University of Toronto Global Educator Award recognizes faculty members who embody the University’s global mission and profile. They are effective teachers who demonstrate intercultural/global fluency—the ability to successfully operate and communicate within different cultural contexts—through pedagogies that reflect a diversity of perspectives and invite engagement from all students.
Graduate Education Innovation Fund (GEIF) The goal of the GEIF program is to advance excellence and innovation in graduate education through greater exposure to innovative educational practices within and across programs and curricula, including both the classroom and field settings, and in the student-faculty member mentorship relationship.
Instructional Technology Innovation Fund (ITIF) The Provost’s Instructional Technology Innovation Fund (ITIF) is a seed fund designed to catalyze initiatives that immediately and directly impact University of Toronto education and teaching programs through innovation and development. ITIF is focused specifically on the practical applications of technology in design, implementation, evaluation, curriculum renewal, faculty development or continuing education initiatives that enrich learning.
Learning Education Advancement Fund (LEAF) The Learning Education Advancement Fund (LEAF) program aims to support the President’s Three Priorities by providing a two-tiered system of funding. There are opportunities for teaching and learning projects that explore, implement and scale up promising practices at different stages of their development and implementation. The program creates a pathway for projects from their initial inception to their full potential.
Northrop Frye Award (Faculty) The Northrop Frye Award (Faculty) recognizes those individuals or team of individuals who have enhanced the student experience through innovative curriculum, co-curricular learning, and pedagogical contributions inside and outside the classroom with a special focus on the integration of research and teaching.
Online Learning Academy Fellowship The Faculty of Arts & Science Online Learning Academy Fellowship provides instructors with the opportunity to design or redevelop an online or hybrid course. Each Fellow will receive funding and support from the Online Learning Academy to realize their digital learning course design project. Completed projects will provide inspiration and models for other faculty through various means of showcasing their work to the broader Arts & Science community.
Open Course Initiative Fund (OCIF) The Open Course Initiative Fund (OCIF) supports instructors seeking to develop new Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).
President's Teaching Award The University-wide President’s Teaching Award (PTA) is the highest honour for teaching at the University of Toronto and recognizes sustained excellence in teaching and significant contributions in educational leadership.
School of Graduate Studies (SGS) Supervision Awards The School of Graduate Studies Supervision Awards aim to recognize outstanding performance in the multiple roles associated with graduate student supervision. Each year, two JJ Berry Smith Doctoral Supervision Awards and two SGS Early Career Supervision Awards will be offered to successful nominees: one of each award in the Humanities/Social Sciences and in the Physical/Life Sciences.
U of T Teaching Fellowship The University of Toronto Teaching Fellowships provide funds for up to five recipients in the Teaching Stream which will allow them to engage in a pedagogical project of direct benefit to students in a defined area of institutional priority.
Undergraduate Course Development Fund (UCDF) The Undergraduate Course Development Fund (UCDF) fosters ongoing, mutually beneficial teaching relationships between graduate-only divisions and units and divisions that offer undergraduate degree programs.

Award Description
3M National Teaching Fellowship Links to an external site. The 3M National Teaching Fellowship is Canada’s most prestigious recognition of excellence in educational leadership and teaching at the post-secondary level.
D2L Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning Links to an external site. Established in 2012, the D2L Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning, sponsored by D2L (Desire2Learn), celebrates and recognizes up to five post-secondary collaborative teams each year for their innovative approaches that promote student-centred teaching and learning.
Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Teaching Awards Links to an external site. The Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) is proud to celebrate outstanding achievements in teaching and academic librarianship at Ontario universities. Anyone within the university community can nominate a faculty member or librarian. Award recipients are selected by an independent OCUFA committee made up of faculty, librarians, and student representatives.
