Welcome to the Copyright Open Educational Resource for the University of Toronto
Before you begin
The University of Toronto takes its copyright obligations seriously, recognizing the legal rights and interests both of copyright owners and of those who use copyright-protected work in their teaching and scholarship. These modules provide the University of Toronto faculty, researchers, students, and staff with a general overview of copyright through seven short, self-directed instructional modules. They are intended to help faculty, researchers, students, and staff ensure that their professional activities comply with Canadian copyright law.
These modules simplify a very complex subject and are offered for information only. They are not a substitute for legal advice.
What does each module cover?
- Introduction
- How does copyright law apply at my university?
- When do I need to think about copyright?
- The balancing act: what rights do copyright holders have?
- The balancing act: what can I do with copyright-protected works?
- What do I need to know about licensing?
- Openly licensed material
Each module includes a:
- Short video: About 4 and 6 minutes in length
- Transcript of the narration from the corresponding video: Depending on your preferred learning style, you might choose to simply read the text-based content. The transcripts also contain helpful links for you to explore and learn more.
- Quiz: The quizzes at the end of each module are learning tools; results are not monitored or retained
These modules are meant to supplement rather than replace the resources provided by the University of Toronto. For information about specific scenarios, consult the University of Toronto's copyright guidelines and policies, and, if necessary, seek legal advice.
