As you watch, listen to her description of key steps involved in the process:

have vaccine dose ready
screen the patient for any contraindications to the vaccine
obtain informed consent
clean the deltoid area of the arm
land mark appropriately
administer vaccine by intramuscular (IM) injection
place a bandage on the site of injection
talk with the patient about side effects
have the patient wait for 5-15 minutes before leaving. For first dose, the usual practice is 15 minutes to ensure no anaphylactic reaction to the vaccine. For repeat doses, such as booster doses, the waiting interval post dose may be decreased based on patient specific parameters.
