Instructions
In this scenario, you will be working through some possible responses to Shashi Anand as she considers if she will take the vaccine. These responses are meant to help you reflect on vaccine use in special populations. The following module page will help you to reflect on your responses.
Vaccines and Specific Populations
Shashi is a 28 year old mother who lives with her parents and infant son who is 11 months old. She has a history of food and medication allergies (i.e. anaphylactic to peanuts and history of rash secondary to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole taken for a urinary tract infection). She is on parental leave and is preparing to return to work as a personal support worker in a long-term care home for the elderly in approximately one month.
She shares with you that she is considering getting the COVID-19 vaccine because she is worried about getting her parents and son sick with COVID-19. She is particularly worried about her mother who has lupus. She tells you she has doubts about vaccine safety in general (she has not yet taken her son to receive his routine childhood immunizations). She thinks this is ok because she is still breastfeeding her son and he is getting immunity from her through her breast milk.
