Using this website

Welcome to IFP100! I'm looking forward to meeting all of you soon.

Like most classes you will take at U of T, this one uses Quercus, our online learning platform. Through Quercus you will hand in all your work, participate in online forums, find links to the class readings, and find all of the supporing materials for the class. In this short introduction I would like to tell you about just a few features of the site that you will use a lot:

  • The Modules Page has links for everything you will need in the class, organized week by week. You will probably use this page quit often.
  • The Syllabus is the most important document on the website. While some specifics of the Course Schedule will change, the rest of the document outlines a firm contract between the teacher (me) and the students (you). It explains your responsibilities and my commitments to you. It also includes links to every reading for this class, so it is extremely useful in that regard as well. Please read it carefully!
  • Assignments will be listed on the Assignments page. There is nothing to see there yet (as of 07/05), but it willsoon be populated with lots of information.
  • The Discussion Forum is our main opportunity for asynchronous communication. If you have questions ofgeneral interest, you can post them there; I will also post my own questions which you will sometimes be required to answer.

Finally, a quick note about accessing the course readings. Every reading on our list is available at no charge to members fo the U of T community. The links I have provided are re-written so that they pass through the U of T proxy servers, to ensure that you are able to access them. However, you will need to authenticate using your new UTORID. Hopefully you are already figuring out how to use the login page – you will be accessing it nearly every day for the next few years. If you have any difficulty accessing the links, please post a question in the discussion forum and either I or your classmates will be able to help.

UPDATE: Some of you are having trouble accessing the readings because your UTORID's are ntoworking. For that reason, I have uploaded readings for the first half of the class to this website. If you have toruble accessing the readings through the links in the syllabus, please look in that folder!.
