Global History

  • History is huge!
  • Many different kinds
    • Political, Social, Cultural, Economic, Etc.
  • Many diffent scales
    • Local, National, Regional, Global
  • Many Other Fields are "Historical"
    • Social Sciences
    • But also some Natural Sciences!
  • All can have some bearing on us

The Nature of Historical Knowledge- History is not like the natural sciences

  • We can't run Experiments
  • Causality is very difficult to determine
    • We can't necessarily say why something happened, and that may not really be our goal
  • We learn about the past not as facts, but as a resource for understanding ourselves and our world.

Global History

  • Our spatial scale is huge
  • our time scale is also huge!
  • Some themes that matter:
    • Origins of "Ciivlization"
    • Power and Loss
    • Freedom and Oppression
    • Movement and mixing of peoples
    • "Formation of Identity"

Food!

  • Everyone eats!
  • Our Foods in some ways define our species
  • And they are also part of our identity
