Overview
This interactive modules provides a basic overview of the MLA citation style. It is based on the ninth edition of the MLA Handbook, published by the Modern Language Association

The Handbook is generally used for academic writing in the humanities. It covers many aspects of research writing including evaluating sources, understanding the mechanics of writing, formatting research papers, avoiding plagiarism, and incorporating and citing sources different types of print and electronic sources.
The guide provides only basic explanations and examples for the most common types of citations used by students enrolled in SPA198H: A Brief History of Love in the Western World and SPA258H: Introduction to Hispanic Literary Studies, both taught by Professor Sanda Munjic in the fall semester of the 2022–2023 academic year. Please consult the Handbook for in-depth information and additional examples of the MLA style of documentation.

Learning Goals
By completing this module, you will be able to:
- demonstrate the importance of properly documenting sources that you reference in your writing
- create in-text citations
- identify the bibliographic elements of different types of citations
- cite a variety of print and online publications, including encyclopedia entries, books, and journal articles
- use and understand the limitations of automatic citation generators available from the library catalogue and other major research tools
- explore additional print and online resources that will help you develop academic research and writing skills.
